A water main break on Chicago’s North Side early Thursday morning turned a busy intersection into a pool of icy water—forcing commuters to wade through flooded streets during the morning rush.
Cars cautiously pushed through the standing water while police blocked off parts of the road. But it wasn’t drivers who stole the spotlight—it was a crossing guard making sure the kids got to school safely.
Check out the video below:
As several children reached the flooded intersection, one hesitated at the edge of the frigid water. Without a second thought, crossing guard Joe Sass lifted the child onto his shoulder and carried them across, keeping them completely dry. At one point, he even stopped to pick up a dropped glove before continuing to the other side.
After safely delivering the child, Sass gave them a reassuring pat on the back and sent them on their way.
“It’s not in the job description,” Sass said later, “but I’ll do just about anything for these kids.”
On a cold, chaotic morning, one simple act of kindness made all the difference—and reminded everyone that heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes, they wear crossing guard vests.
