Landing in Chicago Late At Night? Locals Say AVOID This Common Tourist Mistake!

A question recently popped up in our Facebook group that sparked a HUGE conversation – and it’s one you definitely need to hear about if you’re planning a late-night arrival in the Windy City with your family.

Someone asked: “Should I take the subway (the ‘L’ train) downtown when arriving at 1:30 AM with kids?”

The response from our incredible community of Chicago locals and seasoned travelers was swift and almost unanimous:

A resounding NO.

Here’s why nearly everyone advised against the ‘L’ train after midnight, and what they recommend instead for a safe, stress-free start to your Chicago adventure:

The Blue Line is a 26.93-mile-long (43.34 km) Chicago “L” line which runs from O’Hare International Airport at the far northwest end of the city, through downtown.

Why the ‘L’ Train is NOT Your Friend After Midnight (Especially with Family):

Safety Concerns: This was the biggest point. One local simply stated, “It’s sketchy that late at night. Uber for sure.”

Others were more direct: “With kids? Please uber much safer!”

The general consensus is that while the ‘L’ is great during the day, but late-night hours are a different story, particularly when you’re responsible for little ones.

Convenience Factor (or Lack Thereof): “Navigating luggage and children on a train… might be difficult,” wisely pointed out Nancy Kay Bowden.

Factor in potential walks from the ‘L’ station to your hotel (Beth Bergman noted her exit station was a mile from her hotel) and infrequent late-night buses, and you’ve got a recipe for exhaustion, not relaxation.

Weather Woes: As Jeremy Miller reminded us, “I don’t think you wanna walk outside in this weather.”

Chicago’s weather can be unpredictable, and battling the elements with luggage and tired kids at 2 AM is no fun.

The Overwhelming Recommendation: Uber/Lyft or Taxi!

Our group overwhelmingly recommended opting for a direct ride:

Door-to-Door Convenience: This was key. “Uber/taxi. Would not recommend the train that early in the morning personally. Safe travels!” said Ro Wendsley. Mary Kay added, “Take an Uber. No traffic so much faster and safely door to door.”

Peace of Mind: When you’re tired and navigating an unfamiliar city, the last thing you need is added stress. “No doubt you will be tired,” Nancy Kay Bowden commented. An Uber or taxi takes that burden off your shoulders.

Cost vs. Value: While the ‘L’ is cheaper per person, for a family, the cost of an Uber or taxi (around $50−$60 from O’Hare) often outweighs the hassle, discomfort, and potential safety concerns of public transport at that hour. “Taxi roughly $60 worth it!” vouched Shaun Stetson Vaughn.

Taxis are Right There: Karen Bardwell Travis highlighted a great point: “Do a taxi. Walking to uber pickup after a long day of travel isn’t needed. Taxis right there.”

The Bottom Line from Our Group:

If you’re landing in Chicago around 1:30 AM with your family, skip the ‘L’ train.

For peace of mind, safety, and sheer convenience, book an Uber, Lyft, or grab a taxi.

You’ll thank yourself when you arrive at your hotel warm, safe, and ready for your Chicago adventure!
