The Free Friday Night Star Show Just Minutes from Chicago

Want a night out that costs nothing and takes you far beyond city lights?

Head to Northwestern University’s Dearborn Observatory in Evanston. Every Friday night, the historic telescope dome swings open to the public.

What Happens on a Friday Night

Dearborn offers two ways to visit:

First hour (reservation only). In spring and summer (April–September) it runs 9–10 p.m.; in fall and winter (October–March) 8–9 p.m. Groups with reservations get a guided tour and guaranteed telescope time.

Second hour (walk-in). In spring and summer it’s 10–11 p.m.; in fall and winter 9–10 p.m. Anyone can drop in. Volunteers try to give everyone at least one chance at the eyepiece, but space is limited.

Cloudy skies? Tours still run. You’ll explore the dome, learn the history, and hear sky stories from Northwestern astronomy students.

Step Inside a Working 19th-Century Observatory

Dearborn Observatory’s refracting telescope was the largest in the world when it was built in the 19th century

Built in the 1880s, Dearborn Observatory houses one of the oldest large telescopes in the Midwest. The wooden floors creak, the brass fittings gleam, and the massive dome slowly rotates as the telescope tracks the stars. It’s living history with a view straight into deep space.

Tips Before You Go

Daytime view of the Dearborn Observatory
  • Dress for the weather. The dome has no heat or air-conditioning.
  • Check sky conditions. Viewing depends on the clouds.
  • Arrive early if you have a reservation. Tours start on time.
  • Note accessibility. Multiple staircases mean it isn’t ADA-accessible.
  • Bring questions. Ph.D. students and physics majors lead the sessions and love to talk astronomy.

Special Monthly Evenings

On the last Friday of every month, the observatory hosts CIERA Astronomer Evenings—with a 10-minute mini-talk and Q&A. No reservation needed. It’s a perfect extra for kids and curious adults alike.

The observatory sits on Northwestern’s lakefront campus at 2131 Tech Drive, Evanston. Grab dinner in downtown Evanston first or take a late stroll along the lake after your sky session.

Why People Keep Coming Back

The view changes all year—Saturn’s rings one month, a glowing nebula the next. The mix of rich history and live stargazing makes each visit unique.

Ever looked through a 19th-century telescope and seen another planet with your own eyes? This Friday, you could.
